Georgia Getaway: A Dog-Friendly Day Trip to North Georgia Wine Country
Hey, Georgia dog parents!
We all love our usual spots in the city, but sometimes you just need a change of scenery and some crisp mountain air. Here at Hometown Hounds Co., we think the best cure for the routine is a quick day trip north, and lucky for us, North Georgia is incredibly dog-friendly.
We put together a simple, perfect itinerary for a day trip to the Dahlonega/Ellijay area, complete with stops where your pup can tag along.
Stop 1: Morning Hike & History
Nothing gets the tail wagging like a good trail. North Georgia has some of the best hiking in the state, and many trails welcome dogs on a leash.
Vogel State Park: While a bit of a drive, this park offers a great variety of trails. The famous Bear Hair Gap Trail is a popular, moderate loop that gives you plenty of mountain views and shade. Remember to check their pet rules ahead of time on the Vogel State Park website.
The Gear Check: Make sure your dog is wearing one of our durable, distinctive collars! They’re made for the trail and help your pup stand out.
Stop 2: Patio Pints and Pups
You've earned a break! The best part about this region is how many breweries and wineries are building dog-friendly patios.
For Breweries: Hit up Grumpy Old Men Brewing in Blue Ridge. They have a chill outdoor area where dogs are welcome, and they’ve always got a great selection on tap.
For Wineries: Head to the Ellijay area to visit Engelheim Vineyards. They are famously dog-friendly and allow leashed pets on their beautiful grounds while you enjoy a tasting flight. Always confirm winery policies before arriving!
Stop 3: Seasonal Fun & Fuel Up
Depending on the season, make a final stop for local goods before heading home.
Fall Must-Do: If it's apple season, stop at a spot like B.J. Reece Orchards in Ellijay. They typically allow dogs in the orchards (but usually not the market/bakery), making for a perfect photo op!
Quick Bite: Grab a casual bite in downtown Blue Ridge—many restaurants around the main street offer small pet-friendly patios.
Quick Day Trip Reminders
Keep Water Handy: Mountain hikes mean more effort, so pack more water than you think you need.
Know When to Visit: Peak fall colors are gorgeous, but the trails get crowded. If your pup doesn't like crowds, try a weekday trip!
Safety Check: Use a reflective collar for evening strolls, like our Kennesaw or Tennessee designs.
We hope this gives you some inspiration for your next weekend escape! Let us know where you go and share a picture of your pup on the trail!
Happy exploring,
John & Brittany (The Hometown Hounds Co. Crew!)
